The Singapore Ballroom Dance Teachers' Association (SBDTA) was founded in 1980 by a group of 10 professional teachers ― the late Mr Low Poh San (deceased in Dec-2003), the late Mrs Low Yong Lin, Mr Sunny Low, Mr Steven Kok, Mrs Vivien Kok, Miss Aleena Tan, Miss Pauline Wong, Mr Daivd Yeo, the late Maria Dolores Marcello and the late Jenny Quek.
 

 

Founders 

In 1983, Sunny Low (Adjudicator), Vivien Kok (Adjudicator) and Sunny Low Formation Team, Shawn Tay and Gladys Kok (Amateur Latin) represented Singapore at the South Pacific Championships in Perth, organised by Robert Wrightson.

From 1980 to 1990, the late Joe Loves and Des Matthew (both from Australia), Leonard Morgan (President ICBD London), Lau Teng Chuan (from Singapore Sports Council), Sunny Low, Aleena Tan, Steven and Vivien Kok put in their efforts to unite all dance teachers and seek international recognition with World Dance & Dance Sport Council (43 countries).

In 1988, SBDTA organised a fund raising event and sent six couples, Thin Pon & Ruby Ho, Shawn Tay & Gladys Kok, Alvyn Low & Lucy Wang, Melvyn Low & Nancy Lee, Jerry Tan & Winnie Chan, Allan & Irene Tan with a contingent of 40 supporters to represent Singapore at the Australia Bi-Contennial Celebration in Brisbane. The same year, SBDTA was granted probationary member to the International Council of Ballroom Dancing (London).

In 1991, Aleena Tan was delegated to represent SBDTA to seek affiliation as a member to the International Council of Ballroom Dancing which is now known as World Dance & Dance Sport Council. Full memberships was granted to Singapore in that same year.

Over the years, the late *Mr Low Poh San, Sunny Low, Aleena Tan, Shawn Tay and Allan Tan were delegated to the World Dance & Dance Sport Council's Annual General Meeting at Blackpool, held each year in May.
